Daily Food for Thought

“Some Pharisees and Sadducees were on him again, pressing him to prove himself to them. He told them, “You have a saying that goes, ‘Red sky at night, sailor’s delight; red sky at morning, sailors take warning.’ You find it easy enough to forecast the weather—why can’t you read the signs of the times? (Matt. 16:1-3, The Message)”

Jesus has a go at the Pharisees and Sadducees for being good weather predictors but lousy at understanding the times, the bigger picture. He was referring to himself and what was going on behind all of his works and teachings but it got me thinking about the daily weather forecast and the bigger picture of climate change. How come some people will trust the science behind predictions of today’s weather (a risky thing in Melbourne!) but not the same science behind climate change analysis and predictions? Anyone who dresses according to daily weather forecasts should sit up and take notice of the weather emergency being predicted, or future generations will look back and ask the same question Jesus asked of the religious leaders.
